Leahy on One-Person, One-Vote.

RNC pushback on today's opening statement:

Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT):
“I Will, As The Judge Knows, Ask About The Disturbing Memorandum He Wrote To Become A Political Appointee In The Justice Department. In That, He Professed Concern With The Fundamental Principle Of One-Person, One-Vote, A Principal Of The Quality That Is The Bedrock Of Our Laws.” (Sen. Patrick Leahy, Committee On The Judiciary, Hearings On The Nomination Of Samuel Alito Jr. To Supreme Court, 1/9/06)

The Facts:
Judge Alito Has Stated That The Principle Of One-Person, One Vote Is A Bedrock Principle Of American Constitutional Law. He Has NEVER Taken Issue With The Principle, Even In His 1985 Memo.

White House Spokesman Steve Schmidt: “Judge Alito Believes And Has Told Senators That He Believes 'One Man One Vote' Is Bedrock Principle.” (David Kirkpatrick, “White House Says Alito Allayed Fears On Districting,” The New York Times, 11/23/05)
